Learned while in ENG 1200.10

Aside from learning many things in this class associated with composition, I would have to say learning the proper APA format was one that I learned the most. I am now able to write a reference myself without using a search engine. It was a difficult task to learn, but once I understood the format and what Mr. Hamon was looking for, it seemed easier. After this course is complete I will feel confident citing and references my future papers.

Blogger

This is the first course I have used blogger. Although it seemed like busy work at first, it turned out to be helpful and interesting to read my peers posts. It makes you realize that you are not alone in your ideas and situations. More often than not, my posts and opinions were similar to my peers.

Using google drive

Using google drive in this class has made my documents easier to track and edit due to it's availablility. I have used google drive in the past in many courses and have found it very useful. Especially during group work and presentations. It is easy to share the documents, work as you go, and view the document anywhere you have access.

My impact of BIG DATA

I am sure there are all kinds of BIG DATA that we could apply to our lives. In recent events and a conversation with a girl at my lo0cal gas station that I went to high school with, I am going to chose my age vs. marriage vs. children. So apparently I am not part of the norm, or big data, because she was shocked that I have no children of my own nor have I ever been married. And here I thought the age for marriage and having children was increasing towards thirty, she thought otherwise. My choice to have never been married or have children at this point in my life is one that I think is wise. I find myself getting closer and closer to the idea of marriage and children., but I don't think I should be judged in a negative manner. I have found 'the one' and have all intentions on having that future, but I'd like to finish college and have a stable job before I introduce children into my life. So that's my BIG DATA.

Statistics

I am currently taking a statistics course here at South with Mr. Rose. Understanding the concepts and material can be tricky, but as long as you don't think too deeply into the material, it's easier than you may realize. Mr. Rose has made it very clear that there are differences between statistics and probability. Statistics is a generalization based on a population and it's sample. While a probability is simply a chance that something will happen. Not necessarily based a population and it's sample. If information is collected via a population/sample where you can pose a question, collect data, organize that data and interpret results- it becomes a statistic. It is no longer a probability.

What is your personal learning network?

During my college experience I have found many forms of learning. The easiest way for me is by taking notes, reading them and re-writing them on flash cards for studying. I even find myself reading the index cards outloud, making another form of learning. All of which, instill the information come test day. Group studying and group projects is another form of learning that seems to have helped me along the way. Learning the information from another students perspective really expands the material. Classes that have labs are very hands-on, which is extremely helpful in gaining the knowledge of the material. Of course talking to your teacher and librarian are definite forms of learning that are almost always available.

My peer reviewed doc2

I find it very helpful when my peers review my documents prior to them being submitted to the teacher. It gives me all kinds of feedback to make improvements that I would not have been able to do on my own. We are all writing in this course and consistently posting blogs, so sometimes it is nice to have a helping hand when it seems like all I do is write about myself. Hahaha.

3 more weeks

In just about 3 weeks this quarter will be over and I plan to enjoy my boyfriends beach house on a daily basis. Well, after work and on the weekends of course. It is that time where we are all chomping at the bit to finalize our papers and enjoy the Florida weather. Those of us who are returning to class in April will definitely appreciate a break. Having coming from schools that are on semesters, I think I am beginning to like quarters. Not only do we have 10 week courses instead of 16, but we also get a few weeks break between each quarter. This is officially my last quarter of course work at South prior to applying to the nursing program. I applied for the April cohort but due to me being enrolled in my last stint of courses, I didn't get chosen. So I will work my butt off in the meantime, and enjoy the beach, until the October cohort comes around. I can't wait to begin clinical's and eventually graduate. I know it is the day that we all are looking forward to.

Affordable Care Act

Rogerian style argument is trying to understand the opposing argument. Seeing the argument from a prescriptive that you disagree with. Using the affordable care act as an argument, I will need to play devils advocate. I disagree with the billion dollar investment and believe it has changed our society in a negative way. On the flip side, using the rogerian method, I could see how universal health care would be very beneficial to people with no health coverage, having health issues. Does it help health care as a whole? What does the act do for those who are pay for health care but do not qualify for discounts? These kinds of questions would help me see through the others perspective and find a common ground.

Logos

Does my paper seem logical? Does it have clarity with a logical ideas and experiences?

Researching and understanding the importance of a bachelors degree seemed pointless at first, but when I dug deeper and got feedback from my peers, the idea of requiring existing nurses with an associates to go back to school seemed to be a dispute. Cincinnati Children's hospital was the first hospital that came to mind when i decided to write about this topic. Last year I moved back to Florida from Ohio where they had hiring magnets. Cincy children's and many other health care facilities are no longer hiring nurses with any degree less than that of a bachelors. Their applications are not even considered. This is going to become an epidemic before too long. For many logical reasons hospitals and universities are doing away with diploma nurses and associates degrees and leaning more towards higher education. Many universities, such as South, are offering master degree programs in health care management, nurse practitioner and physician assistant.

Pathos

Pathos refers to the readers feeling. Does a document appeal to the reader in an emotional way? My document regarding ADN vs. BSN most definitely appeals to the reader and their emotions. Most of our class is on a career path toward health sciences, therefore they could quickly relate to my document not only as students pursuing a bachelors degree but also as future health care providers. I think all my peers would agree that getting a bachelors of science in nursing puts them on the right track for a better career and further advancement. Here at South University, new students interested in the nursing field can only follow the path toward a bachelors degree. Existing nurses with an associates may chose to go back to school at South to get a bachelors. The controversy that comes into play is when health care facilities are requiring ADN's to gain a bachelors degree in order to maintain their occupation. This topic brings up many emotions as people tend to disagree and think they should be 'grandfathered in' for all their time and experience.

Ethos

Ethos is about the credibility of the writer and it's sources. In my document about the controversy with requiring all nurses to carry and minimum degree of bachelors, I used three references that spoke from either first handed experience or related to the career path as a whole.

One source was a nurse who practiced with his associates degree and decided to go back to college to get a bachelors. He was actually on the opposing end of my arguement, but I found his website (the Mighty Nurse) to be very helpful for my paper. I used a direct comment that stated we should worry more about our education and patient care than how or where we display our credentials. If you have noticed, most nurse badges say RN and that could be the same ID for a nurse holding either an associates or bachelors degree.

A second source was from Healthleaders Media where a writer used many working nurse from pretisge hospitals to explain the importance of gaining a bachelors degree.

The third source was from Monster.com. A career builder and job finder that briefly but very detailed, explained the importance of a higher education and the path of advancement it could lead.

Voice and Purpose

I am writing my document from my point of view and my references. I am arguing that a BSN should be the state minimum requirement for all nurses and possibly existing nurses. Providing information from my experience in the health care industry and my current role as a health sciences major - will be the main voice of my paper. I have researched and found that not only does an associates degree lack a two year education than that of a bachelors, but it has also been found that they make better nurses. Through higher education, nurses have the proper skills for increased patient care and health science advancements. As far as existing nurses that carry an associates degree, I plan on doing further research to decide whether they should be 'grand-fathered in' or required to maintain a higher degree to continue working.

ADN vs BSN

My documents basic argument is that all new and existing nurses should be required to have a bachelors degree. Licensed practical nurses and nurses that carry an associates degree is just not enough education for the rise in medicines education and constant development. My argument is not one to deter existing nurses from going back to college nor am I arguing that they are incompetent. I simply believe that with the growing economy and developing illnesses and treatments, that it will take a more education nurse to provide better patient care.

Good vs Bad Evidence

My document is about the significance of getting a bachelors of science in nursing, rather than an associates degree in nursing. I believe that many health care facilities are beginning to require a basic level of a bachelors degree to even consider new hires. In addition, they are often requiring existing nurses to pursue their bachelors degree to avoid penalties such as losing ones job.

While searching for articles and nursing association forums, I actually found many articles that backed-up my document idea. With the rise in education and comes a demand for facilities to want to only hire nurse with bachelors degree. I did not come across any poor pieces of evidence that threw my document for a loop. One personal blog was made by a nurse who holds both an associates and a bachelors, and he simply stated the facts. That regardless where an associates and bachelors is required, it is commonly known that a bachelors degree requires several more of education, which in return can lead to better nurse as a whole.

Doc 2

As most of the class has discovered, the majority is seeking a career in the medical field. I plan on writing my document #2 on a question that I get often, is an associates degree in nursing becoming obsolete? It seems that all colleges and univeristies are no longer offering associates in nursing and are only offering bachelors of science in nursing. There are the occasional programs that help existing R.N.'s pursue their B.S.N, but for the most part, the nursing field has gravated to a strict 4 year bachelor program. I think this shift in degree requirements is a great decision and even opportunity for existing nurses. Not only will it benefit the patients, but it will also benefit our society. With the rise in education, comes a rise in supply and demand. The down side is that few L.P.N's and R.N.'s will be able to continue their education due to finances or age. They may become discouraged when they hear that they will be required to continue their education in order to keep their job. I plan on researching the importance of having a bachelors degree and why an associates degree is no longer enough.

Illogically Thinking

There are many ways in which we all illogically think about one another. Whether it be skin color or social class or education, we have stereotyped. For example, I have thought illogically about car preference in relation to race. In Okeechobee we have many parades and festivals in the park downtown. During the parade a hispanic car club always displays their vehicles with loud spanish music, hydraulics and colors of red, green and white. I have found myself hearing the music from a distance and quickly thinking illogically, that the hispanic car club is coming and automatically have a visual picture of the car style. I am not happy to admit this, but we all do it, I am only human.

Fallacies in the Media

So it took me some time and research to find a logical fallacy of the media. I watched the videos on this weeks workshop, but I still needed a correlation to the media. So I immediately thought about politicians and their ugly fight to win. They seem to always attack their opponent in order to gain votes for themselves. I myself am not 'into' politics for this very reason. Discrediting and belittling an other's beliefs and campaign to gain success for yourself, is a horrible fallacy as far as I'm concerned. The arguing never seems to end even when the polls have closed. It's a never ending battle to persuade the people, all the while I feel like we are getting fooled. Is it ever really about what's best for our society? Or is about the race, the name, and the vote?

Opening Statements

Opening statements can make or break your document. It's like reading the back of a book to find out if your even interested. Not only should the opening statement appeal to the reader, but it should also be the foundation for the thesis behind the paper. The reader should know what the main point in your document is after reading your thesis or opening statement. In my experience, after reading the entire document, I sometimes revisit the opening statement and even the document title to see if it was spot on. Deciding on your thesis is not an easy task. It shouldn't be to brief or to long. The main point in my groups police violence document is to inform the reader that childhood violent video games and drug and alcohol abuse lead to violence, including police violence. Can adolescence violent escalate to police violence as an adult?

Peer Evaluations

I did enjoy reading my peers paper. It was very informative and I felt like I could even use some of their references in my paper. My group made many comments on our peer evaluations, mainly positive feedback or grammar errors. The peer group seemed to express great happiness from our positive feedback and shortly resolved all the issued.

On the flip-side. I realize that this was a first draft. Meaning, their was room for great improvement and even finishing up papers were needed. I greatly appreciated all the comments a fellow peer group made on our document, even the comments that we expected to receive. Such as leaving the abstract and APA formatting directions. Hahaha. My group and I know that these comments need to be removed, but we were just afraid to lose the instructions prior to fully completing our paper for final grading. All in all, it was fun to read and comment on my peers and nice to get feedback to improve my own document.

Deductive Reasoning

I find it easiest to understand deductive reasoning by logically reading between the lines. An example of that could be: if A=B and B=C then A=C. Or if I was told apples are a fruit and all fruit grows on trees. I could then make the statement that apples must grown on trees. The same process can be applied to our Police Violence papers. If I did the proper research, like searching for scholarly articles, my statements could be logical and true. I could use deductive reasoning to determine whether or not police violence was correlated with childhood video game usage. If research states that adolescence who were exposed to violent video games became violent adults, I would be able to deduct that such violence could mean police violence. If video games makes an adolescent more violent. And violence can be toward police men and women. It would be through my deductive reasoning that I could say, violent video game usage, as an adolescent, could lead to police violence.

Authority

Many people in the world want to have authority. Knowing that you are in control and have made a confident decision is something great. Authority is something earned, not given. I have seen many people who act very controlling and it often gets confused with authority. It's not the same! Control freaks are weirdos that I want nothing to do with. Eekk! 

Authority is earned in many ways. Such as age, education, career position, and often times socioeconomical status. At this point in my life I do not have as much authority as many other people surrounding me. I am not a mother, a boss, a caregiver, an educator, or a nurse....yet! In the mean time, I show authority about myself and my own confidence while respecting the authority of others. 

In our Doc1 assignment, I showed authority by volunteering to create the group document and share it with my group members. Since this is a group assignment, all other decisions have been discussed and agreed upon by all of the group members. So, it is hard for me to recognize myself as having anymore authority in the matter.

Cop vs. Citizen Violence

I find there to be a huge difference between cop violence and citizen violence. As I mentioned in my previous post, police officers should be properly trained to handle such conflict and violence. They purposely serve to protect the people. I find that to be the main difference between citizen and cop violence. I realize that not all cops live up to their badge. There is always an exception to every rule. And in the perfect world, all police officers would do the ethical thing and always protect the people. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world. With that being said, I wish to not put citizens and cops in the same category of violence. The same applies to school teachers being given rights to carry arms while in the classroom. Although there has been shooting at schools, I do not think that school faculty should be given weapons. They do not have the authority to bring weapons around adolescents nor should they have the right to shoot. There are many other ways to protect our children. Introducing more guns violence is not the answer.

Police Violence: Yay or Nay

Police officers and first responders are not supposed to act violently, they need to be the hero. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. There have been many court cases and disputes regarding police brutality and even death. It is hard to make the assumption that a police officer would harm a suspect deliberately, even when the suspect did nothing wrong. With the proper training and education, police men and women have the skills to determine what actions need to be performed during altercations. I find it very difficult to find a police officer guilty of violence. I would like to believe that they made a conscious decision. One that they will have to live with forever. Innocent until proven guilty, right? With the use of a dash board camera, back up called to the scene, police chief interrogation, I would think that would be enough for a judge to make his final decision. Too many spectators talk about the case and cause a hype that would more than likely not happen if the officer and suspect were of the same race. Every human race has experienced police violence or an altercation from first responders at some point and time. It's just that some make a more fascinating case than others.

My College Life

My college experience has been a long one. I have been taking college courses part time for about 6 years and I feel as if it is beginning to pay off. My education is extremely important to me, no one will take it away! I have chosen to work full time and go to college part time for financial reasons, realizing that in the end, being a full time student would be the only way to graduate. The road has definitely been a long one, but more importantly, well worth it! I believe that I do and will appreciate my education even more because it hasn't been handed to me and because I will never give up.

Hey Y'all

Good Morning y'all! Just like most of you guys have posted, I too am new to the blog spot so I hope my posts don't put you to sleep. Which is why I chose a different font color besides black, boring! 

So my name is Jessica, I am 28 years old and I'm currently enrolled in my last quarter of courses prior to beginning the BSN program here at South University. Whoop Whoop! If I don't get accepted to the nursing program in April (depending on my current courses and if other nursing students fall short of the requirements), I will have to wait for the October program. 

I was born and raised in South Florida and have lived the majority in Okeechobee. In 2009 I moved to Lebanon, Ohio and I moved back to sunny Florida last summer. It was a great experience and I enjoyed living in the Cincinnati suburbs. But nothing is better than home, especially when home is Florida. Word!! 

As far as writing goes, it's not my strong suit but I am always willing to do my best and aim for an A.
